Tribute & Message From The Family

Susan Schaefer "Sue" Day, age 89, of Battle Creek passed away suddenly on Thursday morning, March 19, 2020 at Bronson Battle Creek. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan on December 9, 1930 the loving daughter of Christian and Margaret (Chatters) Schaefer. Sue received her BA in Secondary Education at Central Michigan University and served with the Lakeview School District in various roles for many years.

Sue married the "Love of Her Life", David H. Day III in Saginaw, Michigan on June 11, 1955; he sadly preceded her in death on October 5, 2006. She is survived by her son, Rex V. (Marsha Hersan) Palmatier of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandchildren; David Christian (Torie) Palmatier of Overland Park, Kansas, and Allison (Garth) Phillips of St Charles, Missouri. Sue was also "GiGi" to five great-grandchildren, Harrison, Emmett, Eloise, Miles and Emery. She loved the usually inappropriate but always funny cartoons and tidbits sent by her "favorite cousin", Elmer (Bud) Schartow of Midland, Michigan, and also leaves behind a special friend, Chester "Chet" Francke, and his two children, Steve and Laura.

Sue was involved in so many local organizations and served on the board of so many of them that it is not possible to list them all for fear of missing one. Art, Music, University Women, young people and the First Congregational Church were among her favorite causes. It would be fair to say that her most fulfilling role in life was the time she spent as the Director of the Lakeview High School Student Listener program, touching the lives of hundreds of students, many who called her "Mom". One wrote about her as "known by all and loved by most".

Loving, giving and sharing would best describe her life, well lived. Heaven is now richer and we are now poorer with her passing.

A memorial service to celebrate Sue's life will be held later in the year when it is safe to gather again. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David H. and Susan S. Day Foundation benefitting young people (Battle Creek Community Foundation), First Congregational Church, The Music Center, or the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. Arrangements by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek.
