Tribute & Message From The Family

Susan Schaefer "Sue" Day, age 89, of Battle Creek passed away suddenly on Thursday morning, March 19, 2020 at Bronson Battle Creek. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan on December 9, 1930 the loving daughter of Christian and Margaret (Chatters) Schaefer. Sue received her BA in Secondary Education at Central Michigan University and served with the Lakeview School District in various roles for many years.

Sue married the "Love of Her Life", David H. Day III in Saginaw, Michigan on June 11, 1955; he sadly preceded her in death on October 5, 2006. She is survived by her son, Rex V. (Marsha Hersan) Palmatier of St. Charles, Missouri; two grandchildren; David Christian (Torie) Palmatier of Overland Park, Kansas, and Allison (Garth) Phillips of St Charles, Missouri. Sue was also "GiGi" to five great-grandchildren, Harrison, Emmett, Eloise, Miles and Emery. She loved the usually inappropriate but always funny cartoons and tidbits sent by her "favorite cousin", Elmer (Bud) Schartow of Midland, Michigan, and also leaves behind a special friend, Chester "Chet" Francke, and his two children, Steve and Laura.

Sue was involved in so many local organizations and served on the board of so many of them that it is not possible to list them all for fear of missing one. Art, Music, University Women, young people and the First Congregational Church were among her favorite causes. It would be fair to say that her most fulfilling role in life was the time she spent as the Director of the Lakeview High School Student Listener program, touching the lives of hundreds of students, many who called her "Mom". One wrote about her as "known by all and loved by most".

Loving, giving and sharing would best describe her life, well lived. Heaven is now richer and we are now poorer with her passing.

A memorial service to celebrate Sue's life will be held later in the year when it is safe to gather again. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the David H. and Susan S. Day Foundation benefitting young people (Battle Creek Community Foundation), First Congregational Church, The Music Center, or the Humane Society of South Central Michigan. Arrangements by Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek.

Sue Day first came into my life as a high school student when I volunteered with the Youth Alliance Committee at the Battle Creek Community Foundation. She was always energetic and happy and filled every room she entered with sunshine! After I moved away from Battle Creek, we continued to exchange small notes and birthday cards (she never forgot my birthday!) and would gather for meals whenever I was in town. I will always remember the huge smile that would spread across her face when I walked into church at FCCBC on a Sunday after a long time away from town.

She will continue to inspire me to be a better person and engage in whatever community I live in. I am a better role model for others because of the impact she had on my life.

I first met Sue while volunteering at the Food Bank in 2000. She was charming, intelligent, very community oriented and simply a one-of-a-kind exceptional woman. We shared a treasured friendship for over 20 years. Sue, through her mentorship and involvement with YAC and Planned Parenthood was instrumental in our children becoming wonderful, caring adults. We all were blessed to be the recipients of heartfelt, witty notes and cards with perfect penmanship even in her 80's! Our blessings for her family. We celebrate Sue's life. Ken and Vicki Swisher

My deepest condolences to all of Sue's family. We are praying for you as you grieve the loss of your loved one. Sue was so dear to me. I was one of her first student listeners in high school. I cannot tell you what a significant impact she had on my life as she taught me sound listening techniques and effective communication skills. Beyond the technical skills, she taught me love, compassion, and her special way of approaching life with enthusiasm and relenting optimism. I was so glad to have had lunch with her the spring of 2019 and to get caught up on all that happened to her over the years. She truly cherished her family. She was indeed Mom Day to many of her LHS students. Thank you for sharing her with us. May God bless you with comfort and many wonderful memories of this very special lady.

Rex and Marsha, I was so very sad to hear of Sue's passing. She was a great lady and a good neighbor. She was so kind to my mother years ago when she was going through breast cancer, something I'll never forget. And then of course we ended up neighbors years later. She was a great lady, always had a smile and a wave. I know how much you'll miss her. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

What a privilege it was to work with Sue. She had a beautiful sense of humor. Each year I received a "choice" birthday card from her. Her ability to coordinate the Lakeview High School Student Listener Program was a perfect match. She was a truly classy lady.

Sue was a bff and mentor.zI first met Sue as a newly minted social worker at Lakeview High School. We quickly became skiing buddies as well as good friends, enjoying skiing and numerous social outings
Despite a vast age difference (I knew I would get the last dig)Sue was more like a slightly older sister. Sue was young in spirit, thought, and action. She hD a grest sense of humor and we a li ways laughed in the worst of times.Sue's nickname for me was "stupido" which was a term of endearment. Sue was nesrly as perfect as a friend or person could be,exuding kindness, integrity, genorousity humor and walked the talk of Christianity. A big piece of my heart went with you my friend. Hugs as Sue would say. Sue Miller

Ms Day was a kind and loving ray of light in the most angst filled years of my life. I was one of her Student Listeners at Lakeview and learned so much about helping others through times of crisis. I am so grateful to have been influenced by such a wonderful human. My sincere sorrow for the family and friends that will miss her so.
