Alicia was born in Durango, Durango, Mexico to Manuel and Guadalupe (Chavez) Alvarez on December 28, 1931. She grew up in Durango until age 15 when she moved to Juarez, Mexico, where she received a degree in accounting from E.T.C. College.

Alicia married Oscar Hernandez, the love of her life, in Torreon, Mexico on December 29, 1948. In 1956, Alicia and Oscar moved to Detroit, MI and three days later moved to Battle Creek, where they made their home and raised their family. Alicia's first job was as an assistant manager at the former Miller Department store in the Columbia Plaza. Alicia was the first female promoted to Store Manager for the Miller Corporation and of all the stores at the Columbia Plaza. She later went back to college and reacquainted herself with English accounting terms and worked for Calhoun Federal Savings in the accounting department. In June of 1990, Alicia retired from Cole's Men's Wear, after 23 years as Corporate Secretary-Controller.
