Army Emblem

Carroll Brice Sawyer was born on January 20th, 1930 in Battle Creek to Lavon and Vivian (Spriggs) Sawyer. He graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1948 and began his employment with General Foods, where he remained for 37 ½ years and retiring in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was deployed to Korea for 13 months.

Carroll married Ruth M. (Wygant) Moser on February 19, 1955. He is survived by Ruth and daughter Julie Hume, married to David Hume of Charlotte step grandchildren Paul Hume married to Angela (Varnes) Hume and great grandchildren Helena and Grant Hume of Peoria, Illinois; Kristy (Hume) Grinold married to Kyle Grinold of Vermontville, Michigan. Daughter Cindy Sawyer-Kerschen of Battle Creek; grandson Brice Kerschen married to Martina (Kuehn) Kerschen and great grandchildren Charlie and Wyatt; granddaughter Paige (Kerschen) McClure married to Phillip McClure and great grandchildren Milo and Marlie of Crown Point, Indiana; preceded in death by his parents, by brother Earl Sawyer and sister Lorna (Sawyer) Katz.

Carroll was a member of First Congregational Church in Battle Creek since 1954. He enjoyed antiquing, playing cards, travel, and time with his family and friends. He was involved with 4-H over 40 years and was particularly involved with horses, his joy was when his daughters and step granddaughter, Kristy, participated in horse shows. After retirement he pursued a stained-glass hobby, "CBS Stained Glass" displaying at art shows and local gift shops. One of his highlights was when a local church replaced its stained glass windows, and Carroll made glass keepsakes from the old windows for the congregation.

Carroll left this world on September 11, 2021 surrounded by his family after a short stay at Glenn Arbor Hospice, special thank-you to the wonderful caregivers at that facility. In lieu of flowers, please give a donation in his name to Glenn Arbor Hospice.

The service to celebrate Carroll's life will be held in the sanctuary at the First Congregational Church in Battle Creek at 2:00 pm on Sunday, September 19th. Masks are required. A light luncheon will follow in the church courtyard. Parking is available off Frelinghuysen Street, in back of the church.
