Edith (Hankey) Lockwood, 100, a lifelong Battle Creek resident died at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility on Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

Edith was born December 15, 1916 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Albert Riley and Elizabeth (Leeson) Hankey. She grew up in Battle Creek and was a 1935 graduate of Battle Creek Central High School. Edith completed her Registered Nursing Program and graduated from Mercy College in Detroit. She was employed by Dr. Bertram E. Crase; did private duty nursing at the local hospitals and worked at the former Lakeview General and Leila Hospitals.

Edith was united in marriage to Philip Francis Lockwood on October 31, 1948 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Battle Creek, Michigan. Edith was preceded in death by Philip, her husband of 45 years on March 15, 1993; and by a daughter, Celia Kaplan on October 1, 2008; by a great-granddaughter, Grace Burns and by a brother, George Hankey. Surviving are a daughter, Lois (Ron) Fields of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Meredith (Jason) Burns, Joshua Fields, Allison Fields, Amanda Combs; and great-grandchildren, Jordan Burns, Amber Combs and Caleb Combs.

Edith has been a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, since her baptism there on April 7, 1917. Edith always put her family first and they were her number one priority.

Friends will be received the hour prior to services 9:00-10:00 a.m. Friday at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral services will be officiated by The Rev. Brian Coleman 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 3, 2017. Committal and entombment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please live life as Edith did, with compassion, kindness and love. Memorial contributions in memory of Edith may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church or the Cerebral Palsy Association. Personal messages for the family may be placed at
