Prayer Emblem

Eunice (Burgess) Slighly of Kalamazoo, MI and formerly Battle Creek and Hickory Corners, MI

Eunice, age 98, died on January 25, 2018, at her residence. She remained involved with family and friends throughout her final months, loving and being loved by all who spent time with her. One of her favorite scripture verses was "This is the day that the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it." (Psalm 118:24) The strong faith she lived by was demonstrated each day by the joy she found in her Lord, family and friends. She was caring and creative, insightful, thoughtful and always interested in everything and everyone around her. She sought to keep learning and growing through the very end of her time here. She cared deeply about her faith and wanted others to experience the constant reality of a personal relationship with God through Jesus. She sought to express His love to others because she felt that love so strongly herself.

Eunice was the daughter of Plaford M. and Emma W. (Winterle) Burgess, and was born in Cassopolis, MI on October 11, 1919. She lived in Battle Creek until 1950 and then in Hickory Corners on Gull Lake for the next 40 years. She was a graduate of Battle Creek Lakeview High School and attended Argubright Business College. Eunice had been employed as Assistant Cashier at the former Lakeview State Bank of Battle Creek and also worked part-time at the Richland Township office. She was a former member of the North Avenue Church of God of Battle Creek and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church of Kalamazoo. She was a Past President of the YWCA of Battle Creek and served on the Ladies' Day Committee of the Gull Lake Bible and Missionary Conference for many years.

Eunice married Donald C. Slighly in Battle Creek, MI on January 11, 1942. Their love and commitment to each other was also reflected in their love for their children, and eventually grandchildren. Both were deeply committed to others loving the Lord as they did, with both of them always very involved in their church and years of involvement with the Gull Lake Bible Conference, among many other activities. Don preceded her in death on November 16, 2002. Surviving are two daughters, Brenda J. (Rolland) Fink of Lansing, MI and Sandra K (Timothy) Phillips of Wheaton, IL; her son, Brian C. (Carrie) Slighly of Hickory Corners; seven grandsons, Ryan (Erin) Fink, Jason (Dyan) Fink, Aaron (Lindsay) Phillips, Caleb Phillips, Corey (Simone) Slighly, Christopher Slighly and Tucker (Annie) Slighly; two great grandchildren and two brothers, Hilmar (Ruth) Burgess of Kalamazoo, MI and Paul (Velma) Burgess of Centerville, OH.

A private, family committal was held in Yorkville Cemetery, Ross Township, next to where the same occurred for Don. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in celebration of Eunice's life may be directed to the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission or Gull Lake Ministries (formerly the Gull Lake Bible Conference). The Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel (269-629-6022) is assisting Eunice's family.
