Evelyn VanDongen was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, February 2, 2017, at the age of 92. Evelyn was born on August 13, 1924, to Henry and Cora (LaFleur) Bremer in Grand Rapids, MI. In 1941, the family moved to Battle Creek and she graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1942. She was married to Bruce VanDongen in 1946. After her children were all in school, she worked at American Fire Apparatus for many years and Kellogg Community College in the business office for 17 years. After retiring from there, she worked part-time at Lakeview Card and Gift Shop for 6 years.

She loved outdoor activities such as walking, biking, golfing, camping, and working in her yard. Volunteering was also a big pastime of Evelyn's. She did the HOST program at Ann J. Kellogg for 15 years. Bible for Missions Thrift Store was important to her and she volunteered there at least once a week and was on the Board serving as secretary. Since she was not one to be idle, she did many crafts and was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed reading. Another favorite activity was with the Christian Singles Fellowship, which she organized in 1978 and is still going today. She also was active in her church, Covenant Hope Church (formerly River Walk Community Church), in their Coffee Break Ministries. The old hymns were especially memorable to her since she remembered most of them from her youth.

She is survived by her children Chuck (Joyce) VanDongen of Ada, Kathy (Ken) Gregory of Panama City Beach, FL, and Craig (Becky) VanDongen of Battle Creek, plus 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her sister Carol (George) Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Cora Bremer, husband Bruce VanDongen, her brothers Marvin Bremer and Don Bremer, her sister Bea Meekhof, brother-in-law Calvin Meekhof, sister-in-law Sophie Bremer, and her daughter Jan VanDongen.

Funeral services to celebrate Evelyn's life will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at the Covenant Hope Church, officiated by Pastor Robert L. Zuhl. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 14, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store c/o Homer Root, 1550 West Columbia Ave., Battle Creek, MI 49015.
