Gayle Clayton Askew of Battle Creek, MI

Gayle, age 91, died Sunday evening, June 4, 2017 at the Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence, Battle Creek.

Gayle, the son of Fred and Carrie Ruby (Ryman) Askew, was born in Battle Creek on February 15, 1926 and was a lifetime area resident. He served his Country honorably and nobly during World War II in the United States Navy as a Hospital Apprentice First Class. Gayle retired in 1987 after 36 years of faithful service to the Kellogg Company in the Processing Department and he also worked at the A & P Grocery Store. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post # 565 of Battle Creek and the Disabled American Veterans. Gayle enjoyed watching football and baseball on TV especially The University of Michigan and the Detroit Tigers.

Gayle was united in marriage to the former Lucille Elizabeth "Betty" Smeding in Battle Creek on March 4, 1950. Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Betty; his granddaughter, Lisa (Russell) Hawthorne; two great grandchildren, Brandan and Lindsay Hawthorne and his brother, Donald (Helen) Askew of Battle Creek. Gayle was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda McCleod, a sister, Mildred Ferguson and three brothers, Robert, Gerald and Fred Askew.

The Graveside Service to celebrate Gayle's life will be held on Friday, June 9th at 10:00 a.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, MI with the United States Navy Honor Guard and the Fort Custer Honor Guard bestowing full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Gayle's honor may be directed to Hospice Care of Southwestern Michigan. The Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Battle Creek is assisting Gayle's family with his arrangements.
