Novella MacDonald, age 97, of Battle Creek, Michigan, passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2017.

She was born February 16, 1920 in Joelton, Tennessee to Willie E. and Ollie M. (Dowlen) Mayo. Novella grew up in Joelton, was a 1937 graduate of Joelton High School and earned a secretarial degree from Nashville Business College. Novella married John R. MacDonald on May 6, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida. She was employed as a secretary in a County Agricultural Adjustment Administration Office in Nashville, Tennessee for six years, prior to moving to Michigan in 1945.

Sadly she was preceded in death by John, her husband of 59 years on May 26, 2002; her parents; and brothers Marvin, Elwin, and Earl Mayo. Survivors include her children Michael (Edna) MacDonald and Mary VanDenOever; grandchildren Wesley (Lisa) MacDonald, John (Laci West) VanDenOever, Jason VanDenOever, Luke MacDonald, and Lauren MacDonald; great grandchildren Mark and Lucia MacDonald, Mya and Erikah Barney, Gione West, and Kendall VanDenOever, sister Gera Turrentine; brother Ronnie (Jean) Mayo; sister-in-law Evelyn Mayo, and many nieces and nephews.

Novella was a member of Maple united Methodist Church since 1950, where she was active with the United Methodist Women and worked in the Sunday School Program. Novella enjoyed golfing and was a member of Marywood Country Club. She volunteered for the American Red Cross for 15 years at the former Community Hospital. She was active in the Verona PTA when her children were growing up. Novella enjoyed flower gardening, knitting, basket weaving and doing crafts. She also loved watching her Detroit Tigers & Pistons. She will be remembered as Mimi by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many others who loved her.

Friends will be received 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Monday at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where a memorial service to celebrate Novella's life will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 4, 2017. Inurnment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
