Hershel H. Tanksley of Augusta, MI

Hershel, age 76, died Wednesday morning, March 26, 2014 in Winter Haven, FL, where he and Bettye were wintering and after a courageous battle against cancer.

Hershel, the son of Henry L. and Molly M. (Higgins) Tanksley, was born on January 16, 1938 in Moulton, AL and moved to this area in 1955. He retired in 1993 after 26.5 years of faithful service to General Motors Corporation of Kalamazoo, where he had been a Press Operator/Rack Repairman. He had two passions in life, his family and fishing.

Hershel was united in marriage to the former, Bettye Margaret Harrison on October 1, 1955 in Iuka, MS. Surviving is his wife of nearly 58 years, Bettye; two sons, Michael H. (Tammy) Tanksley and Mitchell L. Tanksley-both of Augusta; four grandchildren, Michael (Angela) Tanksley, Jamie (Edward) Manning, Andrew Tanksley and Matthew Tanksley; two great grandchildren, Ally and Parker Tanksley and four sisters, Jewel Armstrong, Eva Harville, Daisy Yeager and Mary (Bobby) Gay-all of AL. Hershel was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and three brothers.

The Funeral Service to celebrate Hershel's life will be held on Tuesday, April 1st at 2:00 p.m. at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Augusta Chapel, 307 N. Webster Street, with Rev. Jennifer J. Wheeler, Pastor of the Augusta Fellowship United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Village of Augusta Cemetery. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in Hershel's honor may be directed to the American Cancer Society, 1400 West Milham Road, Portage, MI 49024.
