Jean Addie (Ruggles) Thurtle, 77, of Burlington passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2020 at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall with her husband Joseph by her side.

She was born January 8, 1943 in Marshall, Michigan the daughter of Earl Clarence and Ruth Ethel (Smith) Ruggles. She originally lived in Ceresco until moving to Burlington at a young age. Jean attended the Oak Grove and Abscota country schoolhouses and was a 1961 graduate of Union City High School. She was employed briefly from 1961 to 1965 at Coldwater Hospital. Most of her life she followed her greatest calling, caring for others.

Jean Addie Ruggles was united in marriage to Joseph Edward Thurtle on September 5, 1964 at St. Philip Roman Catholic Church in Battle Creek. Surviving are Joe, her husband of 55+ years; three children, James Thurtle of Kalamazoo, Judith (Kurk Sparks) Thurtle of Battle Creek, Jeffrey (Christina) Thurtle of Augusta; five grandchildren, Seth Bader, Rachel Chester, Madilyn Thurtle, Emily Thurtle, Hunter Thurtle; three step-grandchildren, Ashley Chester, Sarah (Daniel) Contreras, Linsey (Jacob) Velting; three step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Louise (Richard) Sivits of Battle Creek, Ruth Ann Smith of Burlington; one brother, Russell Ruggles of Charlotte and several aunts, nieces, nephews and many cousins. Jean was preceded in death by her parents.

Jean was an avid reader and had a love of hummingbirds. In her younger years, she participated in 4-H and taught Sunday school. She also bowled for years in a league at Springlake Lanes with some of her friends. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, quilting, gardening, baking and playing Bunco with her friends. Jean was a member of Newton United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the former East Newton Ladies Aid. She was the caretaker of her family and numerous friends and neighbors. She lived to help others. She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandma, aunt, sister, friend and neighbor.

Friends will be received 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2020 at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care. A service to celebrate Jean's life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2020. Committal and interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
