John M. McCowey, 84 of Battle Creek passed away peacefully at his home on May 29, 2018 with his family at his side.

He was born August 18,1933 in Whitley Bay, England, the son of Wilfred and Martha (Dodds) McCowey. John completed his schooling from Gosforth Modern School, in England and joined the British Royal Navy serving eight years at multiple bases in England, Scotland and Singapore. In 1958, upon discharge from the Royal Navy, John joined his family in the U.S.A. and initially worked in the family bakery. John then worked for Ken Bailey Plumbing, the Hefley Company and for 30 plus years at Crooks Plumbing Company as a Field Superintendent. He had an extensive working knowledge of plumbing parts, fittings, tools and procedures.

John was united in marriage to his love, Louella M. "Lou" McCarry on May 20, 1961 at St. Phillip Church, Battle Creek. Sadly he was proceeded in death by Lou on February 28, 2017. Surviving are his sister, Muriel Zaginailoff of Beverly Massachusetts; brother, David McCowey of Battle Creek and many nieces and nephews and their families.

John was excellent as an athlete playing soccer, cricket and golf. A true sports fan his entire life. John was also excellent as a D.I.Y. person. A talent he often shared with and for many friends. Woodworking was a particular love. John was a private person but an especially loyal friend and a loving, caring brother.

A memorial gathering will be held for John and Lou 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Saturday, June 23th at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care.
