Russell went home to fish on Saturday, October 14, 2017. He is preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Shirley (Moody) Hakes; his four children; David and his sons Aaron and Scott; Cheryl (Robert) and her children Samantha and Michael; Dawn (Brian) and her children Kelly, Jessica and Kevin; Cathy (David) and her daughters Nicole and Abigail (stepdaughters Tessa and Savana); and his sister Patricia Sleeper (Jim) and children Duane and Kathryn.

Russell worked for the State of Michigan at the Psychiatric Hospital in Kalamazoo MI, for 30 years before retiring in July 1995. He worked with Access Vision; showcasing many local events and festivities in the Battle Creek area, including the Post Band Summer Concerts. Anyone who know Russell knows how much he loved fishing.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday evening, October 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral services to celebrate Russell's life will be held on Friday, October 20, 2017 at 11:00 am.
