Vernena "Nena" (Warwick) Wright, 80 of Battle Creek died at her home with her family at her side on Saturday, December 30, 2017.

She was born December 23, 1937 in Fairmont, North Carolina the daughter of Charles and Sarah (Jacobs) Warwick and as a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. Vernena was raised in Pembroke and was a 1957 graduate. In 1961 she received her Bachelor's degree in Education from Pembroke State College. She later earned her Master's degree from Michigan State University. Nena taught for 28 years in the Battle Creek Public Schools and most of that time at Roosevelt Elementary, until retiring in 1996.

Nena met David L. Wright, the love of her life while teaching at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. They were married on February 18, 1966. Sadly Nena was preceded in death by her husband, Dave, on October 5, 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Shannon J. (Mark) Cox of Hayesville, North Carolina; a son, David P. (Meredith) Wright of Battle Creek; five grandchildren, Zachary Cox, Braxton Cox, Emma Cox, Treyton Wright and Kezia Wright; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Warwick of Pembroke, North Carolina and Nancy L. (Doug) Ryan of Battle Creek; Aunt Donna (Blue) Fry of Battle Creek and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. In addition to her husband, Nena was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Reece Warwick; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Lester Hunt.

Nena was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was always shopping and planning her trips back home to the beach. Nena would attend her reunions with her classmates and especially loved her late night talks with family, friends, and previous students. More than anything, Nena had a special love for her 5 grandchildren.

Friends will be received 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, where funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 5, 2017. Committal and interment will follow at Ft. Custer National Cemetery.
