Virginia Emma (Lemon) "Ginny" Hylton of Augusta, MI

Ginny, age 90, died Monday, April 24, 2017, at the Laurels of Galesburg. After being silenced by Alzheimer's for so many years, it is refreshing to remember her vitality.

Ginny, the daughter of Marquis and Christine Lemon, was born in Battle Creek, MI on November 1, 1926 and was a life time area resident and a 1944 graduate of Battle Creek High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and later Westlake Presbyterian Church of Battle Creek.

Ginny was a very busy woman. She had a strong faith and was very active in her church, being a youth leader, pianist for vocal choirs as well as starting and directing a handbell choir. She was a Christian Education director and taught Sunday school. She would also come to be a director of a children's chime choir. Additional church activities included being a Stephen's minister, and her sending out cards to people was a big part of her life.

In 1986, she founded and directed the Cereal City Ringers community handbell choir. They were well known in the area and performed for many churches, local groups, conventions, and Christmas programs.

At home, Ginny was an experienced gardener and winner of the Garden Council Award. She and Gene spent countless hours on their lawn and gardens. She was also a great cook and seamstress and made many matching dresses for her granddaughters. She had a weakness for Golden Retrievers and barn cats. She is being laid to rest with the ashes of her beloved Annie. In earlier years, she was a Cub Scout den mother and President of the Verona PTA.

Ginny was united in marriage to Eugene Evandale "Gene" Hylton in Battle Creek June 1, 1946. He sadly preceded her in death on December 28, 2009. Surviving is her son, Brent E. (Marilyn) Hylton of Scottsdale, AZ; her daughter, Christy (Mark) Connell of Augusta, MI; six precious grandchildren, Rachel (Leighton) Sage, Chris (Andrea) Hylton, Joshua (Adrienne) Hylton, Corey (Drew) Thompson, Ashlee (Bobby Mull) Connell and Logan Connell; six great grandchildren, Brendan and Haleigh Sage, Koston and Tenley Hylton, Abigail Connell and Killian Thompson; and her brother, Mark Lemon of Kalamazoo, MI. Ginny was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Marion Lemon.

The Memorial Service to celebrate Ginny's life will be held at 11:00 a.m, Friday, July 28th at the Westlake Presbyterian Church, 415 S. 28th Street, Battle Creek, MI 49015. Ginny's family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Church. Family and friends will continue Ginny's life celebration with a time of fellowship and a luncheon immediately following the service in the Church Social Hall. Interment will be at 2:00 p.m. next to her beloved husband, Gene, in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Ginny's honor may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, South West Region, 200 Turwill Lane, Suite 6, Kalamazoo, MI 49006.
